For years, Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) has been lagging state averages in 3rd-8th grade student proficiency, showing a roughly 11% deficit across all subjects, though English Language Arts is particularly suffering as less than 32% of Nashville students have been found proficient in the core subject.
An analysis of several years’ worth of education data by WSMV4 Investigates shows MNPS had a lower rate of students passing standardized testing in 2026 compared to the state averages, finding that the average proficiency scores for 3rd-8th grade students fall about 11% below state averages across all core subjects.
And for the third year in a row, English was the lowest-scoring test for students in that age group, meaning nearly 70% are not meeting or exceeding expectations. As the state average ELA proficiency rate is only 41%, MNPS’ 32% puts the district about an additional 10% below that average.
But MNPS officials do not seem to have interpreted the data in a negative light, with Superintendent Adrienne Battle instead celebrating the district’s “undeniable success” in a June press release.
“Our success is undeniable, and it belongs to our students and the educators who believe in them,” Battle said. “By staying focused on improving the conditions for teaching and learning, we are giving our students the support they need to thrive. Building on last year’s record results, these gains reflect the determination of our students and their families, the dedication of our teachers, and a community committed to excellence. We could not be prouder, and we are just getting started.”
The release praised “remarkable academic achievement”, highlighting improvements “across core subjects in grades 3-8 and powerful gains among high school students,” and said that raised proficiencies in ELA, Math, and Social Studies serve as “proof that the district’s momentum is real, sustained, and undeniable.”
While the district did make some gains from previous years, the data from 2023-2026 conclusively shows MNPS 3rd-8th grade students significantly trailing the state’s overall performance in end-of-year exams in every single core subject each year, perhaps making Battle’s assertations of “remarkable achievement” misplaced.
And these scores come as three former MNPS teachers have accused the district of grade manipulation to boost district metrics, with the former employees alleging pressure from leadership to change failing grades and the abuse of the credit recovery system which allows students recoup failed credits through simple multiple-choice tests over just a few days in summer school.
“Statistics are being skewed to protect the district, not our children. Our children cannot read or write. They cannot do basic math… [grade manipulation] creates false entitlement. What happens when these kids lie, cheat and cry their way through school and end up as future doctors, police, or politicians?” said one of the former educators on the issue.
The MNPS failings also appear to be symptomatic of a broader statewide issue, as WSMV’s latest assessment is a subset of other reporting showing that less than 50% of all Tennessee students are proficient in any subject and are not grasping major concepts in pivotal years, making the MNPS deficiencies particularly detrimental as they lag even further behind a potentially languishing state.
