Planned Parenthood Now Receiving Federal Funding Formerly Allocated To Tennessee Dept Of Health

The Tennessee Department of Health has lost federal funding because abortion options are no longer discussed in counseling with pregnant patients.
As reported by The Tennessee Conservative in October of this year, the state had previously been a recipient of approximately $7.1 million per year in Title X federal funding.
These funds were to specifically be allocated for family planning for low-income patients and disbursed through the health department.
But with Tennessee’s abortion ban, the federal government has disqualified Tennessee as a Title X recipient. According to federal officials, Tennessee health departments would have to include out-of-state abortion referrals to pregnant patients in order to maintain funding.
While the Tennessee Department of Health is no longer receiving the funds, a large portion of what was originally sent to the state is being specifically sent to Planned Parenthood in Nashville, Memphis, and Knoxville.
These clinics claim to offer birth control, STD testing, cancer screenings, vasectomies, and referrals to abortion options for those seeking to terminate their pregnancies.
In an article from the Tennessee Lookout it was reported that, as of December 1, 2023, “lawyers for the state filed a motion for a preliminary injunction in federal court seeking to stop U.S. officials from excluding Tennessee from its 2024 disbursements of Title X funding.”
Tennessee Attorney General Johnathan Skrmetti is adamant that the federal government is playing politics in light of the overturning of Roe vs. Wade.
The lawsuit states the Tennessee lawmakers were not made aware of the impact the state abortion ban would have on the Title X funding that the state has received since 1970 when the program first began.
A hearing date has not yet been set for the lawsuit, but in the meantime, $9 million of Tennessee taxpayer money has been allocated to cover the loss of Title X funding.
