On January 26th, Senator Bo Watson (R-Hixson-District 11) introduced a Resolution in the Tennessee Senate to honor and commend 100 years of Bible history in Hamilton County.

Senate Joint Resolution 0882  (SJR0882) passed on first consideration the 26th and has been referred to the Senate Calendar Committee.

The resolution states, “The Bible is one of the cornerstone texts of world history, with a narrative that has had a profound impact on Western culture, and, as such, it is a tome most worthy of study and analysis.

Since 1922, the Bible in the Schools program has provided Hamilton County public school students in grades 6-12 with the opportunity to study the Bible in the classroom; these courses, offered as electives, allow students to study the Bible from a “literary or historical perspective.”

The Bible in the classroom program was developed by Dr. J. Park McCallie, founder of The McCallie School, and was originally known as the Public School Bible Study Committee.

“Bible in the Schools promotes rigorous study of the complex, seminal historical and cultural text,” the resolution states.

The Bible History program consists of five elective courses taught from a “viewpoint-neutral, court-approved curriculum.” These electives are funded entirely through donors from the Hamilton County community and “beyond.”

Now in its Centennial year, the Hamilton County Bible History program provides classes to more than 4,600 students in twenty-nine schools annually.

“It is most fitting that we honor the legacy of this important program, which has had a profound, lasting impact on generations of Hamilton Countians; now, be it resolved…that we honor and commend the Hamilton County Bible History program, Bible in the Schools, on the occasion of its centennial anniversary, extending our best wishes for its continued success,” the resolution states.
