A newly released report shows that Tennessee comes in second in the country when it comes to federal ICE arrests.
Data released by the Prison Policy Initiative shows that Tennessee is just behind the state of Texas in the number of people who are picked up from state jails by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
While the state falls in the top five for ICE arrests per capita, that ranking increases when considering those arrests that happen after individuals are already arrested.
“What the data shows in Tennessee is that police are arresting people—either explicitly for ICE pickup or for other offenses—and then holding them until ICE takes them into custody,” said Wanda Bertram, a spokesperson for the Prison Policy Initiative told News Channel 5.
Knox County has seen a large jump in arrests of illegal aliens, with six individuals being held for ICE in January but almost 50 by April.
In July, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated that additional federal agents would be sent to the state, specifically to Nashville, to assist with ICE pickup.
