Tennessee Dept of Education Releases School Accountability Rankings

Last week, the Tennessee Department of Education released accountability data for public school districts across the state.

The accountability model used by the state looks at grade band success rates, rates of chronic absenteeism, how students perform on the English Language Proficiency Assessment, and graduation rates.

Districts are expected to show increased student achievement and growth across all student groups.

Districts are then ranked using a weighted average and placed into one of the following categories: exemplary, advancing, satisfactory, marginal, and in need of improvement.

There were no districts in the “marginal” category this year. All of the school districts “in need of improvement” are in middle and west Tennessee.

Twelve school districts were named as “exemplary” school districts:

• Bells City Schools
• Bledsoe County Schools
• Bradford Special School District
• Dyer County Schools
• Dyersburg City Schools
• Franklin Special School District
• Gibson County Special School District
• Johnson City Schools
• Rogersville City Schools
• Sweetwater City Schools
• Tennessee School for the Deaf
• Trousdale County Schools

Only seven districts were labeled as “in need of improvement”:

• Achievement School District
• Cannon County Schools
• Hickman County Schools
• Houston County Schools
• Pickett County Schools
• Robertson County Schools
• South Carroll County Special School District
