The Tennessee Conservative Staff –
As legislators gear up for the upcoming 114th General Assembly, Tennessee House Republicans met on Tuesday to decide who would be leading them.
In a unanimous vote, current Speaker Cameron Sexton was chosen to again lead the House of Representatives. This will be his fourth term as Speaker of the House.
“I truly appreciate the support and confidence my colleagues have placed in me to continue in my role as speaker,” Sexton said. “Tennessee continues to grow and thrive because of our conservative philosophies and our dedication to preserving Tennesseans’ freedom and liberty. We will continue fighting for solutions that strengthen and protect Tennessee families and communities.”
Also elected unanimously to serve a fourth term in their respective roles were State Representative William Lamberth (R-Portland-District 44) as majority leader, State Representative Jeremy Faison (R-Crosby-District 11) as caucus chairman, and State Representative Johnny Garrett (R-Goodlettsville-District 45) as majority whip.
After a national election that saw Republicans regain control of both the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives, Republican leaders are optimistic as the GOP retained its supermajority of 75-24.
“It is uplifting to witness the political shift across our nation this year, with Americans overwhelmingly voting to defend conservative values at every level of government,” said Lamberth. “Our caucus is unified in our commitment to pursue the extraordinary vision of Tennesseans who put their faith in us to lead. Tennessee is stronger than ever. I’m thankful for the opportunity to build on our tradition of good governance for the 114th General Assembly.”
Also continuing in their previously held roles are State Representative Pat Marsh (R-Shelbyville-District 62) in his third term as speaker pro tempore and State Representative Mark Cochran (R-Englewood-District 23) in his second term as assistant majority leader.
Newly elected leadership includes State Representative Paul Sherrell (R-Sparta-District 43) as floor leader, State Representative Tim Hicks (R-Gray-District 6), State Representative Kip Capley (R-Summertown-District 71) as secretary, and State Representative Rebecca Alexander (R-Jonesborough-District 7) as treasurer.
Freshman State Representative Fred Atchley (R-Sevierville-District 12) was chosen to serve as freshman floor leader.
