The Tennessee House of Representatives voted to concur with a resolution that would implement a ban on statewide property taxes.

Senate Joint Resolution 001 (SJR001) was presented to the General Assembly by State Representative Tandy Darby (R-Greenfield-District 97).

While Tennessee has not enforced a statewide property tax in over 75 years, the state Constitution currently allows the legislature to reinstate it with a single bill. SJR001 will amend the constitution to restrict the General Assembly from being able to do so.

After Darby’s introduction of the resolution, previous question was called immediately but that motion failed. A single question was raised by State Representative Aftyn Behn (D-Nashville-District 51) regarding whether this would open the state up to being sued by corporations over taxes on real property through the franchise tax.

Previous question was called again after Darby responded and the motion passed.

The House voted 89-6 to concur with SJR001.
