A new national study shows that Tennessee ranks among the top three most dangerous states for fatal hit-and-run crashes, highlighting a growing crisis on American roads.
According to the analysis by Montana Capital Car Title Loans, Tennessee tied with Arizona for the second-highest risk score nationwide, recording 102 deadly hit-and-run incidents in 2023—a rate of 1.40 per 100,000 residents. These crashes accounted for over 8% of all fatal accidents in the state.
California topped the list with 457 fatal hit-and-runs, followed by Arizona and Tennessee, which show disproportionately high per capita rates.
“Tennessee’s numbers show that deadly hit-and-runs aren’t just a big city problem,” said Shir Amram, COO of Montana Capital. “These tragedies often leave families emotionally and financially devastated—especially when victims lack insurance.”
The study used federal crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and population estimates to calculate a composite score based on total incidents, per capita rates, and the percentage of all fatal crashes involving hit-and-runs.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, Iowa and Maine recorded zero fatal hit-and-run crashes, while Idaho and Vermont also ranked among the safest states.
Amram urged drivers in high-risk areas to prioritize comprehensive insurance coverage, including uninsured motorist protection, to guard against financial fallout.
“While we can’t control reckless drivers who flee the scene,” Amram said, “we can control our financial preparedness.”
