Former Rep. Scotty Campbell’s seat in the legislature is one step closer to being secured by interim Rep. Timothy Hill (R-Blountville-District 3).

In April, former Rep. Campbell resigned from his position in the state legislature following sexual harassment allegations and the release of an ethics committee memorandum to the public.

According to the Associated Press, the former representative went on to apologize in a quote by The Tomahawk newspaper saying, “to my family, my friends, and those who misunderstood my intentions.”

Following this unexpected resignation, the Johnson County Commission conducted a vote back in May and elected Rep. Hill to serve as their interim representative until the next general election.

Rep. Hill previously served in the Tennessee House from 2012-2020 and even held the party leadership position of majority whip. The lawmaker from Blountville chose to leave his seat in the state legislature in order to run for an open U.S. House seat in 2020, but lost to current U.S. Rep. Diana Harshbarger (R-TN-District 1).

According to the unofficial election results on the Tennessee Secretary of State’s website, Rep. Hill won out over Republican opponent Stacy Vaughan in a District 3 special election primary on Thursday, June 22nd of this year.

Rep. Hill received support from roughly 81% of District 3’s Republican voters, with the remaining 19% of Republican voters casting their ballots for Vaughan.

On August 3rd a general election will take place, during which Rep. Hill will run against Democratic candidate Lori Love who ran completely unopposed in Thursday’s primary.

District 3 includes all of Johnson County and part of Carter, Hawkins, and Sullivan counties.

  1. Conservatives should welcome Timothy Hill back to the General Assembly. We sorely need conservatives like him to populate the legislature after this year’s disappointing session.
