The University of Memphis will allow nearly 200 students from Ghana to remain enrolled after the Republic of Ghana issued a $1 million payment to the university.

In 2023, the U of M entered into an agreement with the Republic of Ghana through their Ghana Scholarship Secretariat (GSS) program intended to cover tuition and fees for Ghanaian students studying abroad, allowing 185 students to enroll at the university to bring, “diverse perspectives, academic excellence, and cultural richness,” to the community.
In June, it was announced that the government of Ghana had only paid about $400,000 of their $3.6 million bill. They notified the students that they would have to leave the campus if debts were not cleared by July 11.

At the time, University President Bill Hardgrave stated, “I think there was a regime change in Ghana and that affected the budget, but we’re hopeful that gets corrected because we love to keep those students on campus.”
While the $1M payment does not cover the entire debt, UofM will allow the students to remain at the university.
A university spokesperson told Fox13, “We remain hopeful that the Republic of Ghana will meet its debt obligations to ensure the students will be able to continue their education through the fall semester.”
