Vanderbilt Renal Transplant Clinic is refusing to do surgery for a man in need of a kidney transplant because he has not received a COVID-19 vaccine.

Danny Gilliland received a letter from RN Tami Neal dated November 8th stating that the Kidney Transplant Multidisciplinary Selection Committee decided that Mr. Gilliland is not a candidate for transplantation because he did not “meet the selection criteria.” The letter went on to explain that the reason for this was because “the patient declines covid vaccinations.” They added, “If patient changes his mind about vaccinations, we will be happy to re-evaluate.”

Rhonda Thurman, a friend of Gilliland shared her outrage over the situation on social media with a photo of the letter. Some commenters urged Gilliland to seek legal counsel, while others thought he should just “get the shot.”

It is common policy for transplant recipients to be up to date on all available vaccines as transplant patients must take medications for life that lower their immunity and also prevent their bodies from rejecting the organ. Once you become the recipient of an organ, you must avoid vaccines in the future that contain live viruses such as measles or chickenpox, and also stay away from people who have recently been vaccinated with live virus vaccines.

Because patients must sometimes wait years for an organ, selection committees view unvaccinated patients as less than ideal stewards of available organs. In Gilliland’s case though, his wife was willing to donate a kidney to him as a Living Kidney Donor.

Kriste Gilliland commented on Thurman’s post. “I was going to give him one of my kidneys. A group of doctors decided to make it mandatory to have the jab. I guess Vanderbilt has joined the communist party. So much for their Hippocratic Oath, First, do no harm.”

  1. I had a kidney transplant last April 2021, and the only vaccinations that I had going into the operation were the ones received as a child. But the hospital where I had the transplant has since changed their policies. Our freedom of choice, our freedom of speech, are all but disappearing.

There are so many people needing a kidney. This is major surgery. hospitals have criteria for best outcome, survival of both donor and recipient, long term function of the kidney that some people wouldn’t hesitate to comply with whatever is required.
This is practical, good practice because the patients have to take immunosuppressive medications so they don’t reject the kidney and are susceptible infections.
