Last week the Wilson County School Board once again voted to keep explicit materials in school libraries, simply adding them to the high school mature reading list which parents must opt into for their students to gain access.

One of the books in question was Identical by Ellen Hopkins, which received a “Not for Minors” rating on booklooks.org for containing explicit sexual activities, sexual assault and incest in the form of child molestation, self-harm, suicidal ideations and more.

Another book challenged during the school board meeting was Breathless by Jennifer Niven, which also received a “Not for Minors” for containing obscene sexual activities, sexual nudity, alternate sexualities, and references to suicide among other things.

During an October 11th meeting of the Wilson County School Board, public comment was given from county residents both in favor and against removing these books from school libraries in their district.

Shawn Reed summarized the position of several present at the meeting who believe that books like these offer children and teenagers something to relate to.

“Most students of all ages are trained to deal with active shooter situations,” stated Reed. “We have youth who deal with issues of poverty, prejudice, housing insecurity, addiction, and abuse, either directly, in their family, or among their friends.”

Gina Clarke, however, focused on the descriptions of pedophilic incest present in Hopkins’ Identical.

“Identical, is the most disturbing book I’ve ever read,” she stated. “You can read random reviews online and they say, ‘while we usually like this author, it is so deeply disturbing, having it described in detail what daddy does to one of the identical twins while the other twin watches.’ It’s sickening.”

“There shouldn’t be a discussion,” Gina Clarke continued. “This should not be anywhere near a student or in one of our public-school libraries.”

Pastor Jammie Bush also approached the board about the portrayal of sexual abuse in Identical saying, “Have you ever looked in the eyes of a child that’s been abused by an adult? I’m serious. I mean, you guys, you don’t know what you’re messing with here, showing kids these things.”

Sheppard Clarke with citizen group We the People also spoke, reminding voters that primary elections for school board are coming up in March 2024 and that the general elections are in August 2024.

The School Board ultimately voted against removing Identical and Breathless from Wilson County school libraries, instead keeping them on the high school mature reading list.

Board Members Dr. Beth Myers, Joseph Padilla, and Kimberly McGee voted to remove the books despite very clear opposition from their colleagues.

“If the material makes an adult feel uncomfortable, I seriously question that a student can process that material in a healthy way,” stated McGee.

During public comment, it was requested by Jessica Smith that the board reconsider its policy on who is allowed to give feedback on school materials, and more closely align it with the requirements of TCA 49-6-3803 and 49-6-2201.

“The district has liberally allowed this process to also include Wilson County residents,” stated Smith. “Upon reviewing the dozens of books challenged, that have been submitted to the district, the only ones submitted by a parent of a student in Wilson County Public Schools, is the chair of the local Moms for Liberty chapter.”

“What’s next?” Smith continued. “Are Wilson County residents going to be given the ability to challenge school dances because of what dancing may lead to? It needs to end.”

One constituent rebuked this request, noting that her sons graduated from Wilson County Schools and her grandson will soon be enrolled.

“Are you gonna tell me that I don’t have the right to come in here and challenge these books because I don’t currently have a child in the school system?” she asked the board.

It was motioned that policy 4.403 be added to the agenda for a Policy Committee meeting in November.

If this policy is amended, county residents could be restricted from offering feedback to the school board concerning materials, if they do not work for or have a child enrolled in the school district.

If the parents are so strongly against the decision, why are they not starting recall petitions?

Why are they trusting their children with these people 180 days per year at all?

I sure wouldn’t. This pedophile behavior.

Typical of Williamson county. Everyone on the school board ran posing as Republican or conservative, but most of them are satan worshipping pedophile leftists.

Vote them out. They lack common sense and are obviously Woke Libs. What will it take to get people in Wilson County involved?

This quote tells the story – they kept this book in the Library – no decent person wants it near children >

I find it interesting that they don’t want to let citizens who don’t have children currently in the school comment. We all pay taxes and all elect the board.

“it is an exception to this section that the obscene material is possessed by a person having scientific, educational, governmental or other similar justification. ”

Government speak don’t ya just love it ?

It seems to me that these exceptions and justifications can be destroyed in court.

Teaching sexual acts is not their job, understanding biology is supposed to be the goal.
Which can be taught using any mammal.
The subject matter does not have to include human anatomy.
If I were an attorney and as smart as I like to think I am, I’d tear these bipeds a few new orifices. By making them read and justify in public the pornography that public funds are used to provide.
Words like, purveyor, grooming and pedophile come to mind.
