An illegal alien was arrested by Knoxville Police after running from police and attempting to destroy evidence when officers tried to conduct a traffic stop.
54-year-old Duyen Maestroiani is being held in the Knox County jail on a $14,500 bond.
An arrest warrant states that a Knoxville officer attempted to pull Maestroiani over near the Vistas Apartments around 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Maestroiani instead ran a stop sign and sped up, driving in the middle of the lanes on Summit Hill.

When Maestroiani stopped at a red light, the officer attempted to approach the vehicle, but he sped off again. When he finally stopped, he refused to put the vehicle into park or turn it off.
Officers noted that Maestroianai smelled of alcohol, and he admitted to drinking a couple of beers at a work party. A search turned up a large quantity of “Chore Boy,” which is often used as a filter in glass pipes when smoking crack or meth.
No drugs were found in the vehicle, but officers later noticed a rock-like substance in the floor of the police car and in the backseat. It is believed that Maestroiani had the crack in his pocket and attempted to destroy the evidence by crushing it with his handcuffs.
Maestroiani also urinated in the patrol car has he was being transported to jail.
“The vehicle will need to be deep cleaned and taken apart in order to clean inside the cracks,” according to the warrant.
Maestroiani was driving on a license that was revoked in September of this year for a prior DUI offense, and the tags on his vehicle were expired.

He was charged with the following offenses:
- Violation of probation
- Vandalism ($1000-$2500)
- DUI: Second Offense
- Simple Possession/Casual Exchange
- Possession of Unlawful Drug Paraphernalia
- Implied Consent – Enhancement Only
- Tampering with Evidence
- Evading Arrest (Flight Vehicle)
- Vehicle Entering Through Highway or Stop Intersection
- Speeding
Inmate records show that Maestroiani has an immigrant detainer.
He will remain in custody until he is released to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
An ICE hold most likely means he is in this country illegally.
He is due to appear in court on December 23.
