The Tennessee Conservative [By Paula Gomes] –
The Tennessee House Transportation Subcommittee is scheduled to hear three bills related to keeping illegal aliens off of Tennessee roadways on Tuesday, February 17th, 2026.
House Bill 1817 (HB1817), sponsored by Representative Lowell Russell (R-Vonore-District 21), aims to keep drivers with a commercial license off the roads if unable to read and speak the English language. The Senate bill is being sponsored by Senator Janice Bowling (R-Tullahoma-District 16).
House Bill 1706 (HB1706), sponsored by Representative Jason Zachary (R-Knoxville-District 14), would prohibit illegal aliens from operating a commercial motor vehicle in Tennessee and requires that law enforcement arresting such individuals notify federal immigration authorities.
House Bill 1708 (HB1708), sponsored by Representative Kip Capley (R-Summertown-District 71), requires that an individual who applies for a driver license be able to speak and read English “sufficiently.”
