A bill that would authorize local school boards and governing bodies of charter schools to showcase foundational U.S. documents, as well as the Ten Commandments passed on the House floor in a 75 to 17 vote along party lines on Thursday and will now head over to the Senate.

House Bill 0047 (HB0047), sponsored by Representative Michael Hale (R-Smithville-District 40), was carried over from last year’s legislative session.

The companion Senate Bill 0303 (SB0303), sponsored by Senator Mark Pody (R-Lebanon-District 17), has not seen any progress since last year.

Other documents that the legislation would allow to be displayed for students include the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Constitution of Tennessee.
