As early voting is well underway in Tennessee, the choice for State Representative in District 27 will be crucial for voters who cherish families and uphold Christian and conservative values.

The differences between Republican Michele Reneau and Democrat Kathy Lennon are pronounced and clearly illustrate which candidate aligns most closely with the values conservatives across the state are aiming to see in this year’s legislature.

In a recent interview with the progressive news site The Tennessee Holler, Lennon, a former teacher and Hamilton County School Board member, discussed some of her policies and positions, highlighting her extremely liberal ideals on the issues of abortion, marijuana, gun control, and more.

On the topic of abortion, she considers those who would seek to protect women and the unborn “extremists,” and firmly stated, “Government does not need to interfere with women and their healthcare decisions. That is unacceptable. In every instance that you can think of it’s wrong.”

Lennon spent several minutes advocating for the legalization of cannabis, stating she believes it to be a potential solution to the opioid crisis Tennessee is experiencing, along with creating jobs, producing revenue, and helping with education, healthcare, and infrastructure, though she failed to clarify how these areas would be positively impacted or mention any states, like Colorado or California, who have suffered from the effects of marijuana legalization.

While attacking traditional church values held by many in Tennessee, she purported the often misquoted “separation of church and state” ideology and reiterated her disbelief that the legislature is, “supposed to meddle in anybody’s business,” referring to this year’s Cookeville Christmas parade committee comprised of pastors and churches that will ask all participants to sign a declaration of faith, so Jesus will be the center of the parade.”

She also strongly opposed school vouchers, saying, We have to keep public dollars in public schools. The voucher system does not work,” and advocated for stricter gun laws.

Despite promoting herself as the “common sense” candidate, Lennon has been endorsed by the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, Gun Sense Voter, an organization dedicated to electing candidates supporting “gun safety laws at every level of government,” and ChangeTN, which advocates to protect abortion, implement gun control, legalize marijuana, and end the “slate of hate” towards the LGBT community.

Much of the interview was spent asking Lennon her thoughts about her opponent, Michele Reneau, who by contrast has consistently expressed her commitment to conservative principles, most concisely articulated in her campaign slogan, “Defending Faith, Family, Freedom.”

Reneau, driven by her faith and love for God, clearly declares her top priorities to include crushing illegal immigration, unabashedly defending the sanctity of life, preserving the First and Second Amendments, advocating for state sovereignty, and supporting parental rights in education.

Through Reneau’s vast experiences as the child of a legal immigrant, highly successful realtor, Navy wife, and mother of five, she demonstrates her ability to be a strong stateswoman, not a malleable politician, and acknowledges, “Her commitment is to God, to the People of Tennessee District 27, and to the TN and US Constitutions.”

Renau has been endorsed by numerous conservative and grassroots organizations including The Tennessee Conservative, Tennessee Stands, and Tennessee Right to Life, all committed to supporting real Christian and conservative ideals.

The Tennessee Conservative encourages all constituents to cast their votes in support of true conservatives up and down the ballot in this critical election cycle.
