The Tennessee Conservative [By Jason Vaughn] –
In a curriculum review performed by Hamilton County parents and Moms For Liberty, four books have been singled out for exposing students in the classroom to content that many believe will lead to violence, hatred of law enforcement officials and the furtherment of racial divisions.
The recommended reading is intended for children grades 8-12 and 10th grade ELA in Hamilton County Schools.
All four of the books include content where police officers shoot unarmed black children. In two of the books, teens are leaders of riots and in one book, students beat two school security officers.
One of the books, The Hate U Give, was taught in 10th grade English classes last year.
The book content surrounds the fictional story of sixteen-year-old Starr Carter, from a poor black neighborhood who was witness to the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend at the hands of a police officer.
Newsweek states that the book “…is a vital look at racism and police violence.”
