Concerned parents continue to reach out to Hamilton County Schools, questioning student “well-being checks” that will be completed throughout the months of March and April.

Parents are worried about the types of questions that may be asked of their children, as well as who might have access to survey results. Many have asked if there is a way for parents to opt their children out of participating in the surveys.

According to a response sent to Moms for Liberty from Hamilton County Schools, districts are able to customize the surveys to include only the questions they choose for their students. Surveys from previous years included questions in the areas of Emotion Regulation, Growth Mindset, and Social Awareness.

This year’s survey will include questions from six different competencies: Self-management, Emotion Regulation, Social Awareness, Self-Efficacy, Grit, and Growth Mindset.

The surveys are administered once in the fall and again in the spring, but, according to HCS, they are optional. The results are supposedly only used at school level, and parents are able to request a copy of their student’s results from a school counselor or administrator.

School officials say that the well-being checks serve as a “check-in point with students to provide better insight to school staff on what, if any, additional academic or social supports a student may need in order to succeed in school.”

HCS has provided parents with a link to view the questions from this year’s survey, upon request. The questions for grades 3-5 can be found here and the questions for grades 6-12 can be found here.

While many of the questions are simple ones about student confidence levels with classwork and learning, others that are posed are often used as a cover to introduce topics related to critical race theory. The survey from HCS asks students “How carefully did you listen to other people’s points of view?”, “How well did you get along with students who are different from you?”, and “When others disagreed with you, how respectful were you of their views?”

The school system stated that a form was emailed out to families that would allow them to opt their students out of the survey. Those forms were supposed to be returned to individual schools by March 16. Parents still wishing to opt their children out should contact administrators at those specific schools.
