The House Education Committee unanimously passed a bill that would amend the Tennessee teacher code of ethics to prohibit educators from engaging in sexually related behaviors with former students.

House Bill 1973 (HB1973), sponsored by State Representative Mark White (R-Memphis-D83), would make way for educators who engage in sexual activities with students they have had contact with in the last twelve months to be subject to disciplinary action against their licensure.

There were no questions brought in committee, so the bill went to a vote after White’s introduction. All present committee members voted in favor of the legislation, with a total of 14 ayes.

The bill will now be sent to the House Calendar and Rules Committee to be scheduled to be heard on the House floor.

The companion Senate Bill 2106 (SB2106), sponsored by State Senator Dawn White (R-Murfreesboro-D13), unanimously passed the Senate on March 2.
