Is A Christian’s Duty To Only Preach The Gospel Or Is There More To Being A Faithful Disciple Of Jesus Christ?

I have been to many churches where I have been told that children being exposed to porn, the LGBT ideology, child sexual  abuse, abortion, and other issues are “political issues.”

The church is not to speak to these issues. What does scripture say?

Proverbs 24:11-12 – Rescue those being led towards death, hold  back those staggering towards slaughter. If you say, I did not  know about this, does not He who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not He who guards your life know it? Will He not repay  everyone for what they have (and have not) done.

Proverbs 31:7-8 – Speak for those who cannot speak for  themselves…defend the rights of the poor and needy. 

Matthew 25:40 – For whatever you have done to these, the least  of My brethren, you have done to Me.

Christians do not need a special invitation from the Holy Spirit to speak on behalf of the vulnerable it is in God’s word!

Now, not everyone can do all things such as work at a crisis pregnancy  center, but we all must speak out against the murder of the  unborn! While we all cannot work at a ministry that protects children from sexual exploitation, we all must contact our representatives when bills to protect children from sexual  exploitation come up for a vote. 

I have heard from pastors such statements such as, “that is just  the way things are!” I have had pastors tell me when it comes to issues such as children being exposed to porn that, it is legal and therefore little can be done about it! Or, “I am only responsible  for my children!” And, this excuse, “We are in the last days!” 

There are certain Christians in history who took a more Biblical approach. People such as William Wilberforce. During his time, slavery was not only legal but extremely profitable’ it made up to 80% of Great Britain’s foreign income.

According to the  movie, “Amazing Grace,” 11 million men, women and children were taken from Africa, only about half of the slaves survived the ocean voyage to England due to sickness or despair. Sick slaves were thrown into the ocean alive so the slave traders could claim financial compensation. Of those who survived 1/3rd of them died within 3 years because life was so hard. This was legal and “acceptable” to almost everyone. But Wilberforce and a small group of Christians fought against it for over 20 years and it cost Wilberforce his health but he never gave up and 3 days before he died, slavery was outlawed in Great Britain! 

Another devoted Christian was Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

During his time, Jews were considered to be less than human. We know the results of the holocaust, 6 million Jews, the handicapped, the mentally or physically disabled were tortured and killed. This was legal and accepted by most. But not for Bonhoeffer, he tried to get the church to fulfill its role of speaking out in defense of the defenseless. Of 18,000 pastors, 3000 went along with Hitler, 3000 did not, but were not outspoken for the Jews and 12,000 remained silent. It has been said that it was the silence of the 12,000 that caused the holocaust.

Bonhoeffer put it this  way: “Silence in the face of evil, is itself evil. Not to speak, is to  speak. Not to act, is to act, and God will not hold us guiltless.”  

He paid with his life. His voice still speaks today in regards to  speaking up for the vulnerable, to those who will listen!

Another is Mother Cabrini, a tiny, chronically-ill Italian nun who took on the Pope, the Italian senate, the mayor of New York  and others on behalf of the Italian immigrants whose lives were horrendous due to prejudice and injustice.  

According to the movie, “Cabrini,” from 1889 to 1910, over 2  million Italian immigrants came to America looking for a better life. They were illiterate and most did not speak English. They were considered by many in America to be inferior, only fit for menial labor and a threat to America. They lived extremely  difficult lives in the slums of New York. Many became sick due to poor living conditions, were not allowed to be treated in the hospitals, many died. Children were living on the streets.

Mother Cabrini’s vision was to open up an orphanage. She and her little band of nuns faced fierce opposition. And a lot of it came from those who should have been supporting her work! She faced her  character being disparaged, her motives being questioned,  accusations of grandiosity. Despite strong opposition and bad health, she never gave up. She eventually opened an orphanage  and she founded Cabrini Hospital, a hospital for poor immigrants of New York. It was one of the best hospitals of its time!

After accomplishing this, she and her sisters opened orphanages all around the world! I would recommend the movie, “Cabrini.” 

Lastly there was John Quincy Adams who fought to outlaw slavery in America. He fought for 28 years and his bills never passed.

He was asked by a reporter, “why do you keep fighting?” He said, “Duty is ours, results are God’s” And while he died never seeing the result of his work, he had mentored a young congressman. They were very close. This congressman was a pall bearer at his funeral. That congressman’s name was Abraham Lincoln.
