A Carroll County grand jury has indicted the driver of a Kenwood Middle School bus that was involved in a head-on collision with a truck, leaving two students dead and several others injured.
Bus driver Sabrina Ducksworth is charged with vehicular homicide, along with two traffic charges.
The grand jury, however, only returned indictments on two traffic charges: failure to exercise due care and driving on roadways laned for traffic. They did not return an indictment on the homicide charge.
After presenting findings of the investigation by the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the National Transportation Safety Board, District Attorney General J.Neil Thompson requested the indictment of vehicular homicide.
The grand jury, however, said there was “no true bill” on that charge. Because the accident happened in Carroll County, the criminal proceedings will take place there.
Ducksworth was set to return to court on Friday for an initial appearance on the two traffic charges.
Parents of the children involved have sought to hold Ducksworth and Clarksville-Montgomery County Schools responsible for the accident.
CMCSS has maintained that Ducksworth was not at fault because she “suffered an unforeseeable sudden loss of consciousness and/or other physical incapacity due to a stroke, cardiovascular failure, or other medical event prior to the collision.”
