McCarthy Won’t Run Again For Speakership; Only One Tennessee Rep Backed His Ousting

Just hours after being voted out of his leadership position, former U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said late Tuesday he would not run for the position again.

The House of Representatives voted 216-210 earlier in the day to vacate the speakership, leaving the position open and likely kicking off a marathon of votes to replace or reinstate California Republican Kevin McCarthy.

“I believe I can continue to fight, maybe in a different manner,” McCarthy said Tuesday night, after the vote. “I will not run for speaker again. I’ll have the conference pick somebody else.”

A handful of House Republicans joined Democrats to oust McCarthy Tuesday afternoon, despite McCarthy telling reporters earlier that he expected to survive the proceedings. As party leadership, he chose to bring the motion to vacate up quickly for a vote Tuesday afternoon.

The Tennessee Lookout reports that Knoxville Republican Tim Burchett was among the eight to vote to oust the speaker. The rest of the Tennessee delegation backed McCarthy.

Representative Andy Ogles (TN-05) released a statement explaining why he voted “Nay” to McCarthy’s Ousting.

“Last week, we watched House leadership force through a 45-day CR that continued out-of-control spending in Washington. We have had months to pass 12 appropriations bills and fund the government through regular order. I did not come to Washington to do business as usual. I came here to represent the people of Tennessee’s Fifth District diligently and with wisdom,” said Congressman Ogles.

“Right now, we are in the middle of a battle to get the government funded. I fear vacating the Speaker would be premature and risk another bloated CR in November. I share the frustrations and disappointment surrounding McCarthy’s leadership. However, I cannot, in good conscience, act rashly and without proper consideration of the consequences. A team might fire a coach at the end of the season but would not do it mid-game. I think House Republicans are in a similar position; the game we need to win right now is funding the government through regular order. What happens after we secure this win for the American People is still up for debate, but at this moment, I am focused on achieving victory for my constituents and the country.”

U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., will temporarily replace McCarthy in the House leadership position until the full House, where Republicans hold a slight majority, vote in a new speaker.

McCarthy only took on the speakership earlier this year after more than a dozen votes while holdout Republicans demanded concessions.

One of those concessions was that a single lawmaker could file a motion to vacate the speakership and force a vote, something U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., started off when filing the motion to vacate late Monday.

Gaetz said McCarthy broke his promises, pointing in particular to the latest Continuing Resolution to fund the government until mid-November. That deal with House Democrats provided for disaster relief and essentially maintained spending at current levels to buy more time just hours before a government shutdown over the weekend.

McCarthy was able to whittle down the lawmakers who voted against him last time around to get the votes he needed to become Speaker, and he may be able to do it again unless another strong Republican successfully challenges him. Currently, there is no obvious choice to replace McCarthy.

“I think Matt has planned this all along,” McCarthy told reporters. “It didn’t matter what transpired. He would’ve done it if we were in shutdown or not. I firmly believe it is the right decision to keep government open, to make sure our military is still paid, our border agents are still paid, and if that makes a challenge based upon whether or not I should be Speaker, I’ll take that fight.”

Gaetz warned over the weekend that he would file the motion to vacate. He has demanded answers about an alleged side deal he says McCarthy made with the White House over more Ukraine funding, a sticking point and red line for some conservative Republicans who are unwilling to send the large sums overseas any longer.

“I rise to raise a question,” Gaetz said from the House floor Monday. “What was the secret side deal on Ukraine? House Democrats and President Biden have said that as Speaker McCarthy was asking Republicans to vote for a Continuing Resolution to take up the plus-up Ukraine money, that the Speaker of the House was actually cutting a side deal to bring Ukraine legislation to this floor with President Biden and House Democrats.”

As The Center Square previously reported, Gaetz and other Republicans have pushed for passing all 12 appropriations bills in the traditional procedure instead of repeated Continuing Resolutions with topline numbers decided by a handful of members.

But McCarthy says certain Republicans have slowed the appropriations process so that Congress did not meet the government shutdown deadline in time. Lawmakers passed several of those appropriations in the House already, though not enough to fully fund the government. Several were passed at the last minute last week before the shutdown.

Now, the House must continue to hold votes for a new Speaker with either McCarthy being reinstated or another taking his place all as the next shutdown deadline draws nearer.

“I have enough Republicans where at this point next week one of two things will happen: Kevin McCarthy won’t be the Speaker of the House or he will be the Speaker of the House working at the pleasure of the Democrats,” Gaetz told reporters Monday evening.

Just saw the news the Jim Jordan (Heritage-95%) is running to replace McCarthy (53%)! Jordan replacing McCarthy – too good to be true. I won’t get my hopes up, to many centrists/tepid conservatives in the Republican caucus but at least we have someone to root for.

I agree Stuart…Jim Jordan would be a big win for Americans. I do question his passionate speech and allegiance to McCarthy prior to the vote, so I’m cynical….I’ll bet McCarthy will be chosen for a big comm. chairman position if Jordan wins…oh well, you can’t win them all! However, I’d also support Byron Donalds, the first black speaker of the house, how cool! My real concern is with Andy Ogles and Mark Green….who both claim a #conservative mantel but CHOSE politics over principle with their votes on ousting McCarthy. Andy just got elected and his vote surprised me. But, Green is a veteran and none of us should be shocked that the DC swamp water has gotten to them? Maybe they’ve already been in DC to long! Finally, as a 7th district voter, I’ve soured on Green big time…his Sportsman Funding was great for Tennessee, but getting that bill out so quickly was a testament to his ALLEGIANCE to the RINO’s in the UNIPARTY! I will not be voting for him again.

Burchett is the only Republican in TN who isn’t either a treasonous lying anti American leftist, or a gutless backstabbing cuck.

I’m a dyed in the wool conservative and can find nothing in either party to brag about. The Democrats stick together to promote Socialism and the Republicans don’t seem to be able to find their butts with both hands. Until I see term limits and a balanced budget amendment on the table for serious discussion, neither party excites me. Like it or not, I’ll vote for Trump. If they, somehow, manage to put him in jail, he’ll still do a better job of running the country than bumbling Biden and the Democrats

Read this article to see more excuses. Yes he should have never been put into that position because of him being a known as a Big Rino. The Republicans should have backed his removal 100% because of his backroom dealing. Any Republican that did not back his removal should be running against someone in the primaries and swiftly replaced no matter what kind of excuses, whining or apologies. Clean House every opportunity there is. No matter who or how great the President is, they cannot put this Country back on the right track without the proper help.

Ogles is a disappointment here…just politics, as usual. McCarthy lied. He didn’t keep his promises (we knew he wouldn’t), so they booted him out. Good riddance! I am tired of all my money going to support the whole world (which is really just money laundering) instead of keeping it here at home and addressing our own problems. It’s amazing to me that we bicker and fight over something like health care and how costly it is when we could take all foreign aid money and provide free health care for every American citizen. It’s disgusting how they waste OUR money!

I am not happy with Green either. Will not vote for him for any position. Someone needs to show these people that Ukraine is not in the US and shouldn’t be getting our money. Fix America first.
