Tennessee residents looking to gain greater insight into how school boards work within the state can do so, thanks to an upcoming class offered by the Center for Self Governance.

The “Structure of School Government” class will be hosted by Steve Hickey and Karyn French via Zoom on August 31 from 7-9 pm. It will provide information on Tennessee specific laws relating to the functioning of school boards in the state. The class will also “delve into the external influences that act to limit parental voice in school operations and medical ethic determinations.”

The intention of the course is to “prepare new (and perhaps existing) school board members, as well as parents and grandparents of children in school, for the gauntlet they will face.” The organization hopes to increase the effectiveness of candidates and citizens across Tennessee.

There is a $25 registration fee for the course. Interested citizens can sign up on the CSG website.

The Center for Self Governance was co-founded by Air Force veteran Mark Herr, who will be leading the course. The non-profit, non-partisan educational organization is “dedicated to the advancement of (1) a stable civil society, (2) balanced human government, and (3) a well-educated and highly participating populace. The group offers a number of trainings to help citizens to expand their political influence within their states.
