Construction of a new Tennessee Titans stadium has already drawn criticism for utilizing billions of taxpayer dollars and new projections show the stadium’s construction budget ballooning with an additional $100 million.

Supposedly, the Tennessee Titans will be covering the additional $100 million in expenses after the Metro Nashville Sport’s Authority Board of Directors approved the plan changes last week.

Justification for the increase stems from ever-evolving design plans that now include adding more space for undefined growth and increasing technology capabilities designed to smooth the consumer experience, such as ordering and paying for food online versus having to wait in concourse lines.

From its inception, the stadium project has been subject to much scrutiny for assertive and controversial lobbying, some conducted by family members of Tennessee officials.

Add in Governor Lee’s push for Nashville to host the Super Bowl as early as 2028 and the NFL’s general practice of rewarding new stadium construction with the sport’s biggest annual event, it would appear that all efforts are being made to complete construction as expeditiously as possible, with seemingly little regard for the ever-climbing budget or its potential impact on the general citizen.

Along with Governor Lee, some Nashville celebrities like country singer Garth Brooks have championed the project saying, “Progress is our choice as a city and the fact that this city still remains as a small community among each other is also our choice. It’s our choice to become a bigger city but it’s also our choice to not bring the bad in becoming a bigger city.”

Time will tell if the project, which serves as the centerpiece to the Metro-led redevelopment of 300 acres along the riverfront, will be completed within its scheduled three-year time frame and with this new increased budget as Tennessee taxpayers are ultimately the ones footing the bill.
