Legislators continue to work towards establishing greater trust in the integrity of Tennessee elections as a bill that would keep illegal immigrants from voting continues to advance through the House and Senate.

House Bill 2128 was introduced by Representative John Crawford (R-Bristol/Kingsport-District 1) to prevent anyone who is not a U.S. citizen from voting in any election – federal, state, or local – in Tennessee.

The bill would also prevent those individuals from serving on court juries and also “prescribes various other mechanisms for ensuring the integrity of elections in this state.”

The bill was presented to the full Tennessee House of Representatives on March 3 for a vote. It was passed unanimously, with all 92 representatives in attendance voting in favor of the bill.

The companion Senate Bill 2245 is still waiting to be scheduled for the Senate State and Local Government Committee.

If the bill is passed by the Senate and signed by Governor Bill Lee, it will go into effect immediately.
