Police Departments from Knoxville, Metro Nashville, and LaVergne along with the Tennessee Highway Patrol sent officers to Milwaukee this week to provide additional security at the Republican National Convention, just days after the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.
According to the Knoxville Police Department, Milwaukee law enforcement officials actually sent out a nationwide request for backup security several months ago as they began to create a safety plan for the event.
“For our department, this is a unique opportunity for our officers to get on-the-job training and experience while helping to secure an event that will draw a significant national and international audience,” said a department spokesperson. “It is also an opportunity for our officers to engage with and learn from other agencies across the country.”
Knoxville’s officers are providing bike patrol at the event, covering a 3.5 mile radius outside of the venue.
More than 100 agencies are said to have sent over 4,000 officers to assist with security, including the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Metro Nashville Police Department, and La Vergne Police Department.
Trump arrived in Milwaukee on Sunday evening and was in attendance at Monday night’s kickoff, where Ohio Senator J.D. Vance was named as his vice-presidential running mate.
In addition to Trump, Senator Marsha Blackburn was also in attendance, presenting the GOP’s 2024 platform, “Make America Great Again.” Blackburn served as chair of the platform committee. She spoke out in support of Trump’s “forward-looking agenda” and his “vision for American prosperity.”
