The Tennessee Conservative [By Paula Gomes] –
Veterans Affairs (VA) employees confessed to having sex on the grounds of a VA hospital in East Tennessee amid a probe into allegations that officials took part in an orgy.
The Mountain Home VA Medical Center, also known as the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center in Johnson City is the focus of a congressional investigation that has uncovered the disturbing details, possibly going back as far as 2020.
At least twelve officials who once worked at the facility took part in an orgy, and one man (a bargaining unit biomedical employee who has since resigned) bragged about having had sex with thirty-two different co-workers. At least two employees admitted to having sex at work. The location of the orgy has yet to be determined.
To make matters worse, the man and several women talked openly and unashamedly about their sordid rendezvous on an official VA online group forum used to communicate about facility operations and other official governmental business.
As a result of the investigation, several VA officials, including the biomedical staffer and Mountain Home facility director Dean Borsos, have resigned.
After concerns were brought up to the House Committee on Veterans Affairs earlier this year, the committee sent a letter to VA Secretary Denis McDonough, in July asking him to look into the allegations.
Michael Bost, Committee Chairman, wrote a second letter in August to the Biden administration official after receiving no response. As with the first letter, extensive documentation was requested from Mountain Home.
Whistleblowers provided information to the committee regarding the allegations as well as further claims of sexual harassment and assault. Facility leadership, who did not address the unhealthy and unprofessional interactions between staff at the hospital, apparently not only knew about the goings-on but were responsible for what has been called “a serious culture problem at the Mountain Home VA.”
United States Congress Members for Tennessee, Senator Marsha Blackburn and Representative Diana Harshbarger are supportive of the ongoing investigation with Blackburn calling the allegations, “serious and disgusting” in August.
The department which employs over 370,000 employees to help provide services to veterans has recently been in the news in Tennessee for other issues.
Tennessee State Veterans’ Homes, which operates five facilities in the state – Clarksville, Cleveland, Humboldt, Murfreesboro, and Knox County – are over a $1 million in the red with much of the shortfall coming from agency staffing costs.
Chief Financial Officer Adam Fleming told the State Funding Board that staffing changes will fix the issue by the end of the year.
Agency staffing was also blamed for citations from the Department of Veteran Affairs dealing with medication distribution and minor medication errors.
The Tennessee Conservative also reported this week on one military veteran’s battle to get medical coverage for his new wife.
Clarksville resident Andrew Leggins struggled for over six months to get health benefits for his wife who has severe medical needs.
Leggins was forced to apply for expensive private healthcare, and pay out of pocket for necessary bloodwork for his wife who battles scoliosis and Hashimoto’s disease, while being stonewalled by the VA.
With her medication about to run out, and after contacting the media, Leggins finally received a call from the VA, informing him that his wife had finally been added to his CHAMPVA Benefits, but not before her condition deteriorated and a needed surgery was delayed.
