Three Tennessee schools are included in the nearly 200 across the country that received shipments of products that are part of the BrucePac listeria recall.

On October 9, the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a recall on 9,986,245 pounds of meat and poultry due to the possibility of listeria contamination. An additional amount was recalled on Tuesday, bringing the total weight of recalled product to 11.8 million pounds.

The products include frozen meals, prepackaged salads, and sandwich wraps. Many of the brands included are well-known and can be found at a number of local grocery stores: Dole, El Monterey, and Great Value, to name a few.

On Thursday, the USDA’s Food and Safety Inspection Service released a list of almost 200 schools that potentially received the recalled products. They noted that these products were not part of the USDA’s National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.

In Tennessee, three schools were said to have received BrucePac items:

• Cornerstone Learning Center East Memphis

• Cornerstone Learning Center Oakland

• Learning Zone at Berkshire in Murfreesboro

A Cornerstone spokesperson confirmed that they received information regarding the recall and were able to dispose of all products before any were given to children. Learning Zone did not respond to requests for comments regarding the situation.

Schools in 16 different states, as well as the District of Columbia, were impacted by the distribution. Pennsylvania schools made up nearly half of the list of affected locations.

Listeria infection is a bacterial illness that is most often transmitted through deli meats and milk products that are not properly processed.
