Governor Lee Addresses Shootings At Covenant And Relates Plans For Tennessee To Keep Students Safer In School

Yesterday at 1:00 pm in the first press conference since the shooting at Covenant Christian school, and in the wake of the protests at The Capitol last week, Governor Bill Lee addressed the press along with other Republican leaders announcing plans to strengthen security at all schools both public and private all across the Volunteer state.
The governor and other Republican leaders introduced measures that Lee said are meant to enhance current legislation and funding that will enable the state to cover the resources needed to put an armed guard in every public school, enhance the security of the school buildings themselves, and additional funds for mental health support for students and staff in schools.
The Governor’s budget included $30 million dollars for 122 Homeland Security agents to serve at both public as well as private schools in every county in the state.
The issue concerning many Tennesseans is the possible introduction of what are called “red flag laws” which are defined as gun violence prevention law that permits a state court to order the temporary removal of firearms from a person who they believe may present a danger to others or themselves.
Specifically, people are concerned about what the process would look like to determine if a person is a danger to themselves or others, and whether or not those processes will have respect for the 2nd Amendment rights of all Tennesseans.
The Tennessee Conservative will be following the legislative session closely in order to report on any measures the General Assembly attempts to impose and if those measures respect the rights of Tennesseans.
