Beloved for not only her award-winning musical and acting career, “Queen of Country Music” Dolly Parton also leaves a legacy of business successes and philanthropic ventures which have cemented her status as a cultural icon whose light will be sorely missed, especially in her home state of Tennessee.
Parton sadly succumbed to a brief battle with cancer yesterday, peacefully passing at the age of 80. Her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, died in March of 2025, also taking a toll on Dolly as she was devastated by the loss.
In a video update about her health on August 21, Dolly said she was unable to fully tend to her health while “watching over Carl” in his last days, though her health issues never stopped her from working and performing as much as she could.
“You know me- as I’ve often said- I’ve dreamed myself into a corner and I still have so many things I want to achieve, so I’m gonna keep on working as long as I can to see everything come to life,” she declared.
“Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by Carl, her parents, and countless others who have watched her and longed for her to meet them in the heavens,” said her nephew and head of security Bryan Seaver. “She never saw a door she couldn’t open, and the doors she opened made and changed history…Our family and the team she has entrusted with her legacy will work diligently to ensure her spirit will live with us forever.”
Numerous Tennessee officials, many of whom knew Dolly personally or worked with her on various projects, mourned her loss and honored what made her so legendary:
Congresswoman Diana Harshbarger said, “Dolly Parton was one of ours. She grew up in the hills of Sevier County, right here in Tennessee’s First District, and no matter how big her star got, she never stopped being one of us. She built Dollywood into a place that put East Tennessee on the map for the whole world to see, and through her Imagination Library, she put books in the hands of children who needed them most, including so many right here at home. Her music, her generosity, and her love for these mountains will outlast every one of us. Today, East Tennessee is praying for her family and grieving one of our own.”
U.S. Representative Tim Burchett remembered Dolly as one of Tennessee’s “greatest ambassadors”, saying, “Her music inspired generations of Americans, and her philanthropic work helped provide greater access to education for countless young Tennesseans. She represented the very best of the American Dream, and her legacy will love on for generations to come. Rest in peace, Dolly.”
In a separate post, Burchett added, “She was an incredible East Tennessean who served as an inspiration to little girls everywhere. Dolly never changed her accent or forgot where she came from.”
Congressman Andy Ogles expressed sadness that, “Tennessee has lost one of its brightest stars. Dolly Parton was a model Tennessean. A woman of faith, humility, generosity, and extraordinary talent who never forgot where she came from. Our prayers are with Dolly’s family and all those mourning this tremendous loss. Tennessee will never be the same without her.”
U.S. Senator Bill Hagerty shared a photo him and his wife with Dolly, saying the couple is “deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our dear friend, Dolly Parton, and send our sincere condolences to hear her family and loved ones. Dolly was talented beyond compare, and an entrepreneurial juggernaut who played an integral role in transforming our state. She brought laughter and joy to so many through her musical and philanthropic endeavors. She will be deeply, deeply missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, and all of us across the state and nation who knew and loved her.”
“Rare is the one who climbs to the pinnacle of fame, then scoffs at its allure, only to retain the genuine humility that defines them. Dolly Parton was one of a kind, who loved people, her work, her family, and her Lord. Tennessee has forever been changed- enhanced- by her, and will never be quite the same without Dolly,” said Gov. Bill Lee.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Marsha Blackburn wrote, “There are no words to adequately express the sorrow our family and indeed, all Tennesseans, feel in the loss of Dolly Parton. An iconic leader who loved our great state and nation. Her passing leaves a void that no one can ever fill. Dolly, we will always love you.”
TN Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti said the state “has lost a true icon. Dolly Parton’s extraordinary talent, generosity, and love for her home state touched generations far beyond the borders of Tennessee. Her music will live on, but so will the countless lives she changed through her kindness and service to others. My thoughts and prayers are with Dolly’s family, friends, and millions of fans around the world. Tennessee will forever be proud to call her one of our own.”
Chiming in at a more local level, State Senator and Congressional candidate Brent Taylor expressed that he and his wife were “heartbroken to hear of the passing of Tennessee’s great Dolly Parton. Dolly was proud to be a Tennessean, and we were proud to have her as one of our own. Our prayers are with her family and the country who revered her music and wit for decades.”
State Representative Michele Reneau called the family’s video “a beautiful tribute to the Tennessee legend,” and said, “Her music, boundless generosity, and heart of gold left a mark on our state and the entire world that will never be forgotten. Dolly, thank you for everything you gave us.”
Rep. Lowell Russell offered up “Prayers for Dolly’s family during this difficult time. If everyone treated others like she did, the world would be a better place.”
And Rep. Jody Barrett suggested, “If anyone deserves the honor of lying in state in the Capitol, it’s Dolly Parton. RIP.”
President Trump is also honoring the beloved star’s passing, saying it is “a true loss for millions of people. There has never been anyone like her and never will. In her honor, I am lowering the American flag throughout the United States for one week,” which began yesterday at 6 PM.
At Dolly’s request, the family will be hosting a small, private service. In lieu of flowers, the Parton family is asking for donations to be made to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
