In response to The Tennessee Conservative’s article entitled, Speaker Sexton Calls TN Right To Life’s Efforts To Protect Abortion Ban “Intimidation” And “Uncalled For”, conservative constituents of Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton sent him a letter expressing their displeasure with his actions.

The letter to Sexton is copied below verbatim (names of the senders removed at their request):

Speaker Sexton,

During the February 15th meeting of the House Civil Justice Committee while hearing testimony against HB0001, a bill which aims to ban transgender medical treatments given to Tennessee children, Kathy Sinback, Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee, stated that the ACLU of TN would SUE if the bill received passage.

Speaker Sexton, you did not make an appearance at the committee hearing or call out Sinback to speak out against that rather severe and blatant case of “intimidation”.

Yet, you made a point of appearing at the committee hearing of HB778/SB983 (limiting the offense of criminal abortion to only apply to elective abortions) at the February 14th meeting of the House Population Health Subcommittee and accused Mr. Will Brewer with Tennessee Right To Life of “intimidation” for doing his job.

You called Brewer’s efforts “uncalled for”. Mr. Brewer’s actual job is to advocate for the values that define his organization, and inform the public of what is taking place in the General Assembly that is contrary to those values.

You stated: “I’m down here not because I think this vote is going to be close, I’m down here because something happened that I never experienced in my time down here which is somebody on a committee testifying trying to intimidate our members… I’m here to support this bill to show you all the support on this committee, whoever votes for it, that I stand with you and not having the intimidation coming before this committee.”

By making a point of visiting the committee and expressing your support of the bill, and calling out Mr. Brewer, accusing him of “intimidation”, a well-known true conservative that has dedicated his life to saving millions of lives of the unborn in Tennessee, you have just exposed yourself as a RINO… again.

This is the kind of Republican politics that repulses conservative voters. We know exactly what Democrats are going to do. They at least make it clear to everyone. But when someone is a Republican in name only, and votes for truly conservative legislation only when it is politically expedient, and against it for the same reason, this is repugnant to the beliefs of conservatives in Tennessee. It is deceptive, dishonest, and compromising with evil.

It is a stain on our state legislature that many of the Republicans who voted for the legislation in partnership with Tennessee Right To Life in 2019 are some of the same ones betraying voters by whittling away at the groundbreaking stand to protect all unborn life in Tennessee.

It’s an absolute disgrace that in Tennessee, the lives of babies are the ones that lose out because some of our politicians cannot take a stand for what is right, stand strong in it, and be depended on to remain true to it.
