Memphis City Council members say they want to see the state legislature make gun law reform a priority during the next legislature session.
In a Tuesday committee meeting, city council members said their priority is protecting Memphis residents, and they want lawmakers to do the same for people across the state.
This call to action comes just a week after Shelby County voters showed overwhelming support for all three gun referendums that were proposed on the ballot.
Councilwoman Jerri Green says their ultimate goal is to bring about changes to gun laws across the entire state.
“Gun violence is overtaking our city…we’re asking for emergency help from the state,” Green said.
Green says that plans are in the works to create a city ordinance that would go into effect if the next legislative session results in changes to gun legislation. She also called on legislators to attend a retreat with the council to discuss possible changes.
State Senator Brent Taylor (R-Memphis-District 31) released a statement to ABC24, stating that he would “not attend because there is nothing to discuss.”
Taylor’s statement reads:
“As much as some people want the recently approved gun control measures to be implemented, they will not become law. Unfortunately, the Memphis City Council misled the public. They defrauded Memphians into thinking that if citizens voted for the ballot initiatives, they would become law.
Clearly, those referenda are as useful as a nutritional chart on a bag of ice since they violate state law and are unenforceable. You don’t have to be Einstein’s cousin to know state law supersedes local ordinance.
Should the city host a ‘retreat”, I will not attend because there is nothing to discuss. There is no way in hell I’m going to participate in a discussion to disarm law abiding citizens in America’s most dangerous city when no one locally is holding criminals accountable. My colleagues and I are more interested in working with serious people to Make Memphis Matter by holding criminals accountable and increasing economic opportunities. This ‘retreat’ does neither.”

Open carry protesters should show up in massive numbers in front of Memphis city hall with their pistols strapped on and ready for defense from all attackers as the constitution provides for. They might clean up some of the criminal scum while there, if the bold criminals attempt their normal intimidations and attacks on peaceful citizens. BTW, side arms are not the only weapon covered by the constitution, we can carry shotguns and military style semi auto rifles as well with the right to bare arms. Especially when we feel vulnerable to criminal attacks, like one does in Memphis daily while walking , driving or shopping. If the “leaders” in Memphis want to make a safer city, they should rein in their totalitarian natures and the people should vote for a conservative mayor and councilmen, recall most judges and institute a zero tolerance for felons being released without large bail payments or at all, if dangerous or a flight risk. Memphis should have all state funds withheld until they become a partner in fighting crime, instead of targeting good citizens for protecting themselves legally, while releasing thugs to terrorize the public. During the covid19 debacle, Memphis felt like living in North Korea, with many low intelligence police thugs, politicians and liberals running amok over the common man or woman’s rights. People talk about how bad Chicago is, but Memphis is a smaller version of the same disaster. Democrats are actually working for the Marxist and other Godless pervert communities.
