State Senator Brent Taylor (R-Memphis-District 31) is bringing even more accusations against the Shelby County District Attorney, after already asking that the DA and a local judge be investigated.

Taylor says District Attorney Steve Mulroy seems to be working with liberal justice reform groups in an effort to allow dangerous criminals to remain free by eliminating state bail.

According to Taylor, Mulroy’s partnerships with groups such as Justice Innovation Lab, Vera Institute, and Just City have made him weak when it comes to prosecuting crime.

Taylor, who serves on the Tennessee Senate Judiciary Committee, says, “They all advocate ending cash bail. They all support lenient prosecutions.”

A letter sent by Taylor this week requests that the Tennessee District Attorneys Conference obtain additional information about what Mulroy’s contracts with those groups actually entail and how they could potentially impact the judicial system in Shelby County.

Mulroy’s office insists that they are doing nothing illegal and claims that similar partnerships were made under the previous District Attorney.

“This is baseless…it’s hard not to suspect this is political, especially when his last press release was sent by a conservative campaign consulting firm, not by his Senate office,” read a statement.

Mulroy reiterated his focus on “reducing violent crime and justice reform.”

On Tuesday, he announced 12 arrests for “smash and go jobs” and said, “We’re going to vigorously prosecute. The message should be clear: if you commit these crimes, you will be prosecuted and you will go to prison.”

Taylor argues that Mulroy is not acting in accordance with legislation from state lawmakers with the intent of cracking down on crime.

“What we have in Shelby County, unfortunately, is a progressive DA. But what we need is an aggressive DA,” said Taylor. “We need someone who is serious about prosecuting these people who are committing these crimes and incarcerating them. That’s the only way we’re going to send a message that there are true consequences to their actions.”

Taylor also told Action News 5 that he plans to introduce legislation that would remove General Sessions Court Judge Bill Anderson from his position as the supervisor of the judicial commissioners. This group sets bond for people in Shelby County. Anderson recently released a first-degree murder suspect with no bail.

“Our community is in crisis mode,” said Taylor. “We are in a crime crisis and don’t have the luxury of time to see if these restorative justice practices are going to work.”
