Despite broad public support and endorsements from several fellow Senators, Representatives, and other prominent political figures, Rick Scott of Florida has lost the election for Senate Majority Leader.

The first round of voting, conducted by a controversial secret ballot, saw Scott dropped from the race after supposedly only losing advancement to the second round by two votes to Sen. John Cornyn of Texas. Scott won 13 votes while Cornyn won 15, thereby ensuring Scott’s elimination.

In the second round, also by secret vote, Sen. John Thune of North Dakota edged out Cornyn with a reportedly final vote count of 29-24. Thune has been confirmed the winner by several media outlets and pundits.

Thune released a statement after the win promising, “This Republican team is united behind President Trump’s agenda, and our work starts today,” though Thune has previously been notoriously anti-Trump.

The social media sphere was ablaze with commentary condemning the secrecy of the process, calling for vote numbers to be leaked, and voters apparently planning to force a switch of representation come the primary elections.

“Since it was all done in secret, every [f***n] Republican @GOP needs to be primaried. We need to start looking for MAGA candidates in every red state who actually represents their constituents and carry out the will of the American people,” one commentor said.

Tennessee activist Robby Starbuck chimed in, “There’s room for many views, but only one agenda got a mandate and it wasn’t Romney era politics, it was MAGA. That’s why voters are livid over Thune as Senate Majority Leader.”

The Tennessee Conservative’s own Brandon Lewis also lamented the apparent lack of true representation amongst elected officials. “Q. Will the Senate listen to the voters? A. No. Never trust a vote without transparency…” the post stated.

Lewis went on to say, “Senate Republicans in Washington DC and the State Senate Republicans in Tennessee have one thing in common… Neither listen to the will of the voters even when it is made abundantly clear. The swamp is going to swamp.”

Commentator Charlie Kirk seemed to encapsulate the general sentiments of the day, “John Thune is Senate Majority Leader. He has a short window to show us he will support President Trump, fill his cabinet, confirm his judges, and pass his agenda. If he does, we will support him. If he doesn’t, we will work to remove him.”

Senator Rick Scott posted on social media, “I may have lost the vote, but I am optimistic. I ran for leader with one mission: to fundamentally change how the Senate operates and upend the status quo so we can actually start representing the voters who put us here. When I announced, I said that we are in a moment where we need dramatic change. The voters confirmed that last week when they elected President Trump and Republicans took the majority in both chambers of Congress with a clear mandate.

I want to thank my friend President Trump and the support I received from so many Americans from every corner of our country. I am truly humbled by the millions of Americans who supported my run, and the many patriots who made their voices heard to demand change. While it isn’t the result we hoped for, I will do everything possible to make sure John Thune is successful in accomplishing President Trump’s agenda. I would also like to thank John Cornyn for running a great race.

  1. Marsha Blackburn voted for Thune on the preliminary ballot. Then, when the vote went secret, it was reported that she went for Scott. I do not trust this kind of garbage.

  2. This is the problem with a secret ballot.
    We don’t know.
I will not vote for both Tennessee senators next election. Let the chips fall where they may.
