Bill To Stop Transportation Of Illegal Aliens Stalls Out In Senate Judiciary Committee (Update 3.16.23)

***Update 3.16.23: Niceley’s office related to the Tennessee Conservative that they decided to “General-Sub” the bill in order to focus their attention on another illegal immigration bill (SB1151) – having to do with harboring illegal aliens on public property.***

A bill intended to assist in the fight against illegal immigration was set to be considered by the Senate Judiciary Committee, but that legislation has now been sent back to the general subcommittee.

Senate Bill 1150 (SB1150), sponsored by Senator Frank Niceley (R-Strawberry Plains-District 8), would remove exemptions from prosecution of the offense of transporting illegal aliens for common carriers and those transporting individuals for religious purposes. The bill amends TCA Title 4; Title 7; Title 9; Title 37; Title 39; Title 49; Title 50; Title 55; Title 67; Title 68; and Title 71.

In every case we have witnessed, when bills that are sent backwards to a general subcommittee, called “General-Subbed” by legislators, they never make it back to the full committee for consideration. Lawmakers use this tactic when they no longer have any intention of dealing with a piece of legislation during the current session.

Without a mention of the bill or any discussion, the bill was skipped over in yesterday’s meeting.  However, the General Assembly website states that SB1150 has now been “Assigned to General Subcommittee of Senate Judiciary Committee.”

The House version of the bill (HB1246), sponsored by Representative Dennis Powers (R-Jacksboro-District 36) is still being held on desk, pending amendments as a caption bill.

Niceley sponsored a similar bill during the last legislative session, but it was also killed once it reached the Senate Judiciary Committee, with 5 nays, including 3 from Republicans: Senator Todd Gardenhire (R-Chattanooga-District 10), Senator Jon Stevens (R-Huntingdon-District 24), and then-Senator Mike Bell.

The Tennessee Conservative has reached out to SB1150’s sponsor, Senator Niceley, along with the House sponsor (Representative Dennis Powers) and Senate Judiciary Committee Vice-chair Dawn White (R-Murfreesboro-District 13) for further explanation about what happened with the bill and what we can expect with the legislation going forward. We will publish updates as new information is available.

WTH. Is tennessee a blue state now? This makes me sick. I lived in Texas for over 35 years and saw firsthand what illegal immigration brings.

These RINOs that we have in the legislature are absolutely worthless. They couldn’t care less about the burden that illegal immigration puts on the individual states or the nation. It’s all feel good politics for them or cheap labor or both. They are cowards for not doing the right and legal thing.

TN law says that if you have work authorization you can’t be an illegal alien, so if this bill was passed it would interrupt the flow of cheap foreign labor that the ‘Republicans want to protect.
