The Tennessee Conservative [By Paula Gomes] –

Andy Ogles, current Mayor of Maury County, plans to enter the race for the 5th Congressional District, a source confirmed to The Tennessee Conservative.

It’s no secret that Ogles has been considering running for the seat. He was seen visiting with Wilson County Republican Party members last month, where he has obvious support. Indeed, several candidates have visited Wilson County recently which has had the majority of its voters redrawn into District 5 from District 6.

The new boundaries include all of Maury County, Lewis, and Marshall counties, as well as southeast Williamson County, Brentwood and southeast Davidson County, Bellmeade and 75% of Wilson County.

According to Ballotpedia, 7 candidates are officially on the ballot for the Republican primary, with more getting ready to announce according to our sources. Beth Harwell, previous Republican House Speaker, is also considering running.

Ogles has taken issue with Trump’s pick Morgan Ortagus who is a recent addition to the state. He believes that Republicans want someone who has a history here in Tennessee.

Ogles certainly fits the bill, coming from a long line of Tennessee descendants. He grew up in Franklin and moved to Maury County several years ago. He has served one term as county mayor.

On January 29th, he won the Republican nomination to seek a second term as county mayor without opposition at the Maury County Republican Caucus. Ogles beat Charlie Norman in the 2018 election and would face him again if were to pursue reelection as Norman plans to run as an Independent.

Many wondered last year if Ogles would consider running for governor due to his criticism of Governor Bill Lee’s executive orders regarding COVID-19 mandates.

Ogles is well known for pushing back against the recent federal OSHA proposal that would have required employees at companies with 100 or more workers to wear masks and get tested weekly if not vaccinated against COVID-19.

A strong supporter of medical and religious exemptions, Ogles sent a letter to Maury County employees saying he would “go to jail” rather than require them to comply with mandates, which were later overturned by the Supreme Court.

Last month, Ogles briefly addressed Wilson County Republicans on the topic of constitutional freedom saying, “It matters who leads.”

Ah, if it were only true! If Andy runs he’s the movement conservative candidate. If not, Beth Harwell (ACU-86%) will certainly be much more than simply good enough. The rest are No Record Candidates and U. S. congressman is too important a job for it to be regarded as a place for a political dilletante to get his/her start in politics.
