Tennessee Legislation Would Expand Child Abuse Laws To Protect Unborn Children

The Tennessee Conservative [By Jason Vaughn] –

A new bill proposed to the Tennessee General Assembly would upgrade laws against child abuse to protect the lives of unborn children as well.

House Bill 2314 (HB2314) was introduced on February 1 by Representative Bruce Griffey (R – Paris – District 75). As written, the bill would “expand the offenses” of varying levels of to “include acts of abuse, neglect, and endangerment against an unborn child.”

Additionally, the bill proposes to define an unborn child as “an individual living member of the species, homo sapiens, throughout the entire embryonic and fetal stages of the unborn child from fertilization to birth.”

The bill has been placed on the House Health Subcommittee calendar for February 22.

Its partner bill in the Senate (SB2300) was sponsored by Senator Mark Pody (R-Lebanon-District 17). It was passed on first and second consideration and has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee on February 3rd. 

This legislation is one of several bills introduced by Senator Pody to protect unborn children. Senate Bill 0494 would grant fathers the right to petition the court to deny a woman’s right to have an abortion. Senate Bill 0204 places limitations on who can perform an abortion procedure and when those procedures can be done.
