Encouragement, 2 Rainbows, Elections & “Little” Jimmy Dickens – Brandon’s Brain

By Brandon Lewis [Founder of The Tennessee Conservative] –

While I do not get attached to things, I do form deep attachments to people and places.

My old home is one of those places.

This week, I went out there to take care of a few things.

It was odd to see my house… empty. No furniture, no toys, no pictures.

Empty.

No kids yelling, TV’s blaring or music playing.

Empty.

As empty as when I bought it 15 years ago.

I had roughly 7 roommates there before I was married – and living with a friend does something to deepen a friendship in a way that’s hard to explain.

I met my wife there and wooed her with Wagon Wheel, That’s the Way Love Goes and Lay You Down on the guitar.

My oldest daughter was born in the downstairs bedroom.

It was, at times, Grand Central Station. We had showers, engagement parties, fraternity functions, live bands, brunches, church events and all-night parties.

We had wonderful holidays. I mean full of joy and happiness.

A couple of them were blissfully surreal.

Now?

Empty.

And about to belong to someone else.

I wept. Like I was losing a friend.

It is ridiculous and certainly illogical.

After all, it’s just wood and stone.

But, I lived there for 15 years. That’s longer than I’ve ever lived anywhere else – and I was the happiest there I’ve ever been.

This new home, because of the builder I selected, has been a source of contention and frustration. That’s a big environmental contrast.

I get it. “It’ll be fixed a lot longer than it’s broken.” I agree and I know it’s true.

The last two times I’ve gone to the old house, to be honest, I have not liked it. It just makes me sad.

However, I wonder if God doesn’t know this…

The second to last time I left, there was a beautiful, magnificent rainbow in the sky – a “double bow” to be exact. I got to see it with my long-time neighbors and friends, Jasper and Cathy.

This last time, there was another one. Simply beautiful. Again, the neighbors came out to see it while my daughter played in the yard with her best friend.

Maybe that’s God’s way of saying, “Son, you can’t have a rainbow without the rain. And I promise: You’re not home yet.”

Encouragement:

Running the ‘ole Tennessee Conservative sucks some days.

S-U-C-K-S. It can be a drag reporting the truth about Tennessee culture and politics.

Hey, I don’t make the news. I just report it.

Still, being in conflict – and I mean continual, unceasing conflict – can wear you out.

When you spend your time telling the truth about things while people in power would rather not have anyone know, it’s conflict.

Very often, I see only small glimmers of hope for liberty, freedom and Conservatism in our state.

It seems like the bureaucrats, left-leaning corporations and RINOs will have their way.

Then, out of the blue, I get this email…

Hi Brandon!

We wanted to let you know here in Blount Co we replaced 3 school board members tonight! We came to the Tennessee Freedom Summit in McDonald and met some local people.

When we got back we started attending the Blount Co Coalition Meetings hosted by Mark Pulliam. We met some other parents and began a regional chapter of US Parents involved in Education, Smoky MTN PIE.

We made it our mission to hold the board accountable and when they blew us off, we decided to find people to replace them.

And tonight we did! 3 of the 4 seats up were replaced!

We are super excited and attribute this to your summit and providing us the opportunity to find our people! We just wanted to share!

Weekend Plans (written August 5th):

We’ve got a BIG birthday party for Ruby going on tomorrow! We’re celebrating, prematurely, the 4th year.

Friends, family, the whole nine yards. Probably 30+ people.

While our floors are ripped up in the family room, formal living room, and master bedroom – and boxes abound – we’re making the best of it.

Air mattresses and blankets will cover the floors at Lewis Manor this weekend for the family sleepover.

Little Jimmy Dickens wrote a funny song called “Sleeping at the Foot of the Bed.” You should give it a listen.

We’ll be living that song this weekend!

God Bless You,

Brandon Lewis
