Senate Committee Passes Bill To Allow Law Enforcement Agencies To Assign SROs To Schools That Fail To Request One

The Tennessee Conservative Staff –

A bill that would allow law enforcement agencies to assign an officer to schools that fail to request a school resource officer passed through the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

Senator Joey Hensley (R-Hohenwald-District 28) sponsored Senate Bill 1715 (SB1715), which would give that authorization to law enforcement agencies if a local board of education has not requested that an officer be assigned to a school.

After a brief introduction of the bill, Chairman Todd Gardenhire ask the committee for questions. After seeing none, Hensley moved to vote on the bill.

SB1715 passed the committee with 6 ayes and 3 nays.

Democratic Senators Sara Kyle (D-Memphis-District 30) and London Lamar (D-Memphis-District 33) voted against the bill, as did Republican Senator Jon Lundberg (R-Bristol-District 4).

The bill will move on to the Senate Calendar Committee.

The House version of the bill, House Bill 1664 (HB1664), was referred to the Calendar and Rules Committee on March 20.
