With lots of work to be done, Tennessee’s 2024 general session begins at noon on Tuesday, January 9th.

Representative Scott Cepicky (R-Culleoka) didn’t mince words when he said he anticipates the coming session to be “contentious.”

Cepicky further stated, “Is it going to be argumentative? Yes. But we are still going to keep Tennessee on the right path.”

Cepicky has outlined several legislation proposals pertaining to Tennessee students and teachers.

One focuses on student math scores and proficiency and would require summer school for students scoring below the benchmark on the TCAP. These students would not be at risk of being held back, but would receive extra help over the summer break.

Other pieces of legislation will aim to increase teacher salaries, contribute to teachers’ child care expenses, and revamp educator insurance options by making teachers state employees that can, therefore, access state health insurance.

Governor Lee’s school voucher proposal will also be brought before the assembly.

Representative Harold Love Jr. (D-Nashville) plans to propose bills focused on public safety and gun reform.

He is also looking to expand Medicaid and better fund state universities. Love says he opposes the Governor’s voucher program.

2024 promises to be an interesting and, at times, controversial year in the Tennessee legislature.

Controversial in that we will have legislators that are statesmen v. politicians. Statemen care about the next generation. Politicians care only about the next election. We have way too many politicians in office. Time to clean house in 2024.
