1. Grew up in N.J. Late 70’s early 80’s the mass from across the Hudson River started over. Slowly but surely they brought their baggage and cancer. Even though they hated the high taxes and policies, they couldn’t help themselves to change things.
2. Here and in Alabama, another state I lived in, TOO MANY natives say, “They won’t change our state!” That leads to apathy about elections and getting involved. Well if they don’t, somebody else will. Can’t just worry about college football season.
3. Lack of participation in Primaries by the conservatives. When Democrats run as Republicans and get in, well you get RINOS.
4. In the few years I lived here, Cumberland County, I have contacted my following reps…
-Senators Blackburn and Haggerty. Blackburn has responded to me one time out of 6 and Senator Haggerty has responded 6 of 6.
-Congressman John Rose. Contacted his office 7 times and just one response.
-State Senator Paul Bailey and Rep. Cameron Sexton. Contacted both offices 4 times and ZERO RESPONSES.
-Cumberland County Mayor Allan Foster. 3 for 3 and some very good discussions.
My District 3 commissioner’s…Former Commissioner Stone…1 time and she responded and wish she was still in. The current commissioners have not responded to 2 contact attempts.
It was very reminiscent of living in Alabama, no elected officials seem to feel they need to respond to their constituents.
Now in N.J., even the Democrats responded back, of course we never saw eye to eye but they did. Heck, even President Trump’s office responds back with a form letter.
Point being, you’re an elected official and need to engage your constituents, even if it’s your staff that does it. Those constituents who are on the fence, politically, may not be as forgiven and look to vote for someone who DOES engage them.
