Bill To Stop TN Taxpayer Education Funding Of Illegal Aliens To Be Heard In Committees

A bill that would cease state funding for the education of illegal immigrants continues to make its way through both the Tennessee House and Senate.

House Bill 1648, sponsored by Representative Bruce Griffey (R-Paris-District 75), would allow school districts to decide whether they wanted to enroll a student who is unlawfully in the United States, but it would also strip those districts of any state funding to go towards those students, making the districts financially responsible for those students if they choose to enroll them.

In a previous statement about the bill, Griffey said, “More than a quarter of Tennessee’s budget — over $4.8 billion a year — is allocated to funding K-12 education. According to the Federation for American Immigration Reform, in 2017, $383 million of the state’s education budget went to funding education for illegals.”

The bill’s aim is to remove the burden of educating undocumented children from Tennessee taxpayers.

“I don’t think we should force all Tennessee taxpayers to fund the education for folks that come here illegally, because they did come here illegally,” Griffey said.

The bill is scheduled to be heard by the House K-12 Subcommittee on March 15.

The companion Senate Bill 2597, sponsored by Senator Joey Hensley (R-Hohenwald-District 28), is slated for the March 16 calendar of the Senate Education Committee.
